THE popular Givaudan Ashford 10K, which attracts around 1,000 runners to Ashford each October, has been selected to host the British Masters 10K Championships in 2012.
Another feature of the race will be the Southern Counties Vets AC 10K championships.
The selection of the Ashford race to host these two important championships is a feather in the cap for Ashford AC and reward for the hard work put in to make the race an enjoyable spectacle for both participants and spectators alike.
The award is expected to add around 200 athletes to the start line of the race which is looking to accommodate around 1500 participants next year. The majority of the Masters athletes will be from outside the area and, indeed, will travel from all parts of the UK to take part, providing the town with a substantial economic boost.
The Givaudan Ashford 10K takes place on Sunday October 14, 2012 and is organised on behalf of the club by Nice Work. Race entries are now open for the event which is suitable for both experienced athletes and those new to running.

Masterful effort for 10k
Veterans miss out
ASHFORD’S veterans have missed out on a play-off match after a disappointing showing in their final league meeting.
A late surge by meeting winners Cambridge Harriers saw Ashford slip to third in the SCV league behind Blackheath & Bromley and Cambridge.
Pete Davey and Steve Lake gave Ashford a win double in the M35 100m and Lake had a second in the long jump while M50 athlete Wayne Howe defied injury to take a creditable second in the M35 discus.
There was a fine win for Steve Langford in the M50 long jump while Kev Williams took third in the M50 800m and M60 athlete Dave Fox stepped in to take a third in the M50 discus.
Iain Presnell was third in the M50 100m and joined Lake, Davey and Guy van Damme for third in the medley relay.
Guy and Ian King battled for points in the M36 800m.
Fourth for Candy
ASHFORD AC’s veteran Candy Hawkins just missed a medal at the European Deaf Athletics Championships in Turkey taking fourth in the 5000m.
She recorded a slow time of 20 minutes 48 seconds in a field of eight athletes and only six finished due to the high humidity and altitude problems.
Candy is back to normal training and hoping to go to the World Championships next year in Canada and may go for longer distance or marathon.
“I’ll have to wait and see how training is going and have a chat with my coach,” she said.
She also thanked all those people who supported funding the trip and competitions.
