Spring Road Relays

The dark days of winter are over and believe it or not, it is spring, which means road relay time!

The road relays are a series of five 4km (ish) races on Tuesday nights, around the county, where you can run for your club. The races are totally inclusive with the racing snakes competing in the A-team, all the way down to the old timers like me. The Senior Men’s teams comprise of four runners, and the Senior Ladies and Vet Men’s teams comprise of three runners.

The Club pays your entry fee, all you need to do is sign up on the sheet at the signing in desk with your age category (U18, Senior, Vet 35, Vet 40, Vet 45 etc) and your England Athletics number which was sent to you via email in mid-April. Then all you need is your Ashford AC vest, running shoes and a sense of team spirit and adventure. We have some really strong runners so you will need to put up a good fight for the top slots, but I desperately want to see a lot of yellow and black vests at these events, especially the Ashford one (which we need to provide marshals for as well). Athletics is all about inclusivity, so let’s demonstrate our inclusivity by getting lots of people out to these races.

1 - Folkestone - Tuesday 21st May 2019;

2 - Minnis Bay - Tuesday 28th May 2019;

3 - Ashford (Victoria Park) - Tuesday 11th June 2019;

4 - Samphire Hoe - Tuesday 25th June 2019;

5 - Canterbury - Tuesday 9th July 2019 (plus picnic afterwards).

Moving on from the relays there are a few dates for races which I would like to see Ashford AC putting a few runners/teams into, these include:

June 9th - Staplehurst 10K;

June 23rd - Sandwich 10K;

June 30th - Port Lympne 10K;

July 14th - Mid Kent 5 Miler;

August 4th - Lydd 10K;

October 6th - Givaudan 10K.

Some longer races:

September 1st - Kent Half Marathon (Thanet);

September 29th - Folkestone Half Marathon;

October 27th - Ashford & District 10 Miler (sold out last year!),

Plus, we are looking at having a representative outing to Ashford Parkrun in early July. This is where we invite all Ashford runners to attend in their representative kit (so your Ashford, Kent, England or GB kit can get an outing). This will hopefully be the first weekend in July, but we are trying to balance all the leagues, championships and important races, so finding a date is tricky.

If interested in any of these just speak to Gerard (Doc) on any Club night.
