British Masters Championships

Ashford AC athletes dominated the British Masters Championships, in Birmingham, on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August. The Club were represented by three athletes at this year’s Championships, with the trio coming home with five medals.

The British Masters Championships is an annual event which sees the countries best veteran athletes, aged thirty-five years and above, compete across all event disciplines. Ashford AC were represented by Peter Davey (veteran-45 age group), Steve Langford (veteran-60 age group) and Lesley Hall (veteran-60 age group).

Peter Davey took on the 110m Hurdles and 400m Hurdles, taking home two medals. Peter took Bronze in the 110m Hurdles in a time of 17.04s and Silver in the 400m Hurdles in a time of 69.76s. Just a week before, Peter was competing in the European Masters Games in Italy. Peter dominated both hurdles events, taking Silver in the 110m Hurdles in a time of 16.68s and a well-deserved Gold in the 400m Hurdles in a very respectable time of 64.05s.

Steve Langford and Lesley Hall both competed in the veteran-60 age group. Steve jumped very well in the Long Jump, despite having to jump into a headwind, taking Bronze with a distance of 4.76m. The following day, Steve jumped a huge 10.22m in the Triple Jump to win a well-deserved Gold medal. This was Steve’s furthest jump since 2013, cementing his number one spot in the UK this year and making him the eleventh best triple jumper in British history for his respective age group. Race walker, Lesley, also had a great day in the tough women’s 5000m Walk. Lesley won her race in a time of 33m02.06s, taking home the Gold medal.

Under-17 Inter-Counties Championships Report

Posted: 24th Jul 2019 by Lewis Smith

Ashford AC athletes dominated the Under 17 Inter-Counties Championships, in Chelmsford, on Sunday.

Ashford AC were well represented in this year’s Kent team, with eight athletes helping their county compete against the best athletes from eight counties across the South of England – including the very strong, national leading Surrey and Essex teams.

The tough standard of competition meant that Kent finished fourth in this year’s Championships. Despite this, there were a number of outstanding performances by Ashford AC’s athletes. Top young sprinter, Kristian Samwell-Nash (pictured below), won the 400m in a time of 50.24s. The win added to his Schools’ Inter-Counties title. Another top performance came from Louis Small, who finished second in the 3000m with a new Club Record of 8m48.08s. Jumper, Michael Alajiki, was also close to breaking a Club Record in the Triple Jump. Michael jumped a huge personal best of 14.05m, over two metres better than what he was jumping just this time last year. Michael also performed well in the 80m Hurdles.

Valuable points also came from Sarris Teale who competed in the 100m, Long Jump and 4x100m Relay. Imogen Davis also competed in a range of events – including the 100m, 200m, Long Jump and 4x100m Relay. Bronwyn Yeandle displayed her versatility as an athlete, performing well in both the Pole Vault and 4x100m Relay. Ella Saxby ran a strong race in the 200m, as well as an impressive leg in the 4x100m Relay. Elisha Roger ran a great race in the 1500m, just fractionally missing out on her personal best with a time of 4m56.99s.

The Kent U17 Girls 4x100m Relay team finished the day in style. What was unusual was that the team was made up only of Ashford AC athletes (pictured below), something that has not happened before. Despite only competing together once the week before, the girls only just missed out on the eleven-year-old Club Record by 0.28 seconds. The girls are hoping to break the Record this weekend, at the YDL, on their home track.
