Spring Road Relays

Posted: 14th Mar 2020 by Lewis Smith

It's that time of the year again - spring road relays!

The road relays are a series of five 4km (ish) races on Tuesday nights, around the county, where you can run for your club. The races are totally inclusive for all ages and abilities - the Club are able to enter numerous teams so we hope to see lot's of athletes turning out. The Senior Men’s teams comprise of four runners, and the Senior Ladies and Veteran Men’s teams comprise of three runners.

The Club pays your entry fee. All you need is your Ashford AC vest, running shoes, and a sense of team spirit and adventure. We have some really strong runners so you will need to put up a good fight for the top slots, but we desperately want to see a lot of yellow and black vests at these events, especially the Ashford one (which we need to provide marshals for as well). Athletics is all about inclusivity, so let’s demonstrate our inclusivity by getting lots of people out to these races.

Dates:

1 - Folkestone - Tuesday 19th May 2020 (CANCELLED);

2 - Minnis Bay - Tuesday 26th May 2020 (CANCELLED);

Great South Run 2019 Report

Posted: 22nd Oct 2019 by Lewis Smith

The Great South Run took place on Sunday, 20th October 2019 in Portsmouth for its thirtieth year. The 10-mile race, broadcasted on live television, is renowned as the biggest 10-mile race in the world, with over 20,000 runners taking part. The race starts and finishes along the coastline of Portsmouth, featuring landmarks such as HMS Warrior, HMS Victory and the Emirates Spinnaker Tower. The city was packed with cheering supporters, who were enjoying the warm weather conditions just as much as the runners were.

Youngster, Marshall Smith (19), from Ashford Athletic Club, had only raced over the 10-mile distance twice prior to the start of this race. Despite this, he has had previous successes in the race, having won the junior title for the past two years and being ranked first in the UK over the distance for under-20 year olds in 2018. This year, Marshall received an elite entry for the race alongside experienced Olympic and Team GB athletes, and was aiming high for another strong result.

Marshall ran a well-paced race, going through 5km in 16m03s and 10km in 32m23s, and then finishing the final 6km strongly to complete the 10-mile distance in a time of 52m25s. Marshall came 26th out of over 20,000 runners, being the first junior home for the third year in a row. His time also broke the Ashford AC Club Record and ranked him number one in the UK this year for his age category for the second year in a row.

Ashford AC also had two other athletes at the Great South Run. Up-and-coming youngster, Harry Miles, competed in the Great South Junior Run, finishing an excellent 3rd over the 2.5km distance in a time of 8m36s. Sahil Sood also ran very well in the 10-mile race, finishing 486th in a new personal best time of 1hr07m52s.
