Ashford AC Youngsters Dominate Ashford Givaudan 10K Race Second Year in a Row

Posted: 8th Oct 2019 by Lewis Smith

The sell-out Ashford Givaudan 10K Race took to the streets on Sunday, with Ashford AC dominating the race once again.

With 1400 entries for the annual Ashford Givaudan 10K Race, runners followed in the footsteps of tradition for the 33rd year. Up-and-coming youngsters, Louis Small and Adam Wood, both from Ashford AC, ran a competitive race to take 1st and 2nd place. Becky Morrish, of Tonbridge AC, took home the women’s trophy.

The race started and finished at the magnificent home track of Ashford Athletic Club, the Julie Rose Stadium, with a town-centre route that was lined with cheering supporters. An atmosphere that all runners praised. Despite the weather reports forecasting showers, the runners were fortunate enough to have dry conditions throughout the entire duration of the race.

Ashford AC athlete, Yasmin Sadler-Reeves, started the race this year. Yasmin was asked to start the race, having designed the 2019 medal commemorating the 150th anniversary of Willesborough’s windmill - a fantastic design which runners absolutely loved!

Louis, competing in his first ever 10K race, finished strongly to take the win in a time of 33m07s, with Adam just behind in 33m32s. Dylan Rigby, from Durham University, took 3rd place respectively in a time of 33m35s. Ashford AC’s Jack Small, also competing in his first 10K race, narrowly missed out on 3rd place with a time of 33m42s. However, his strong performance allowed the trio of Ashford AC youngsters to take home the team prize. Nick Collins, also from Ashford AC, took 5th place with a very respectable time of 34m03s.

Becky ran a strong race to take the ladies title in a time of 37m50s, with Tonbridge AC also taking home the women’s team prize. Becky was followed by Jill Cliff, from Deal Tri Club, in a time of 39m10s to take 2nd place. Imogen Amos, last year’s winner, took 3rd place respectively in a time of 39m35s, running for Invicta East Kent AC.

The men’s and women’s Veteran-40 winners were Nick Collins (34m05s) and Kerry Camping (45m31s), Veteran-50’s Mark Champion (37m55s) and Claire Pluckrose (42m36s), and Veteran 60’s Roger Hyland (41m21s) and Margaret Connolly (49m44s).

Congratulations also go to Ashford AC athletes William Knight (9th – 35m25s), Ben Hebblethwaite (12th – 36m27s), Gerard O’Sullivan (60th – 39m47s), Briony Walsh (101st – 42m09s), Kristian Samwell-Nash (176th – 45m22s), Andrew Huxley (266th – 47m44s), Isabel Dickinson (457th – 52m58s), Gordon Steadwood (668th – 56m14s) and Nicki Buckman (1049th – 68m48s).

The Ashford Givaudan Kids Fun Run was also very well represented this year. The children ran around the Julie Rose Stadium running track, with supporters lined around the track to cheer them on to the finish where they received their medals. The boys 400m was won by Daniel Butt, with Evan Rolfe taking 2nd place and James Wilcox taking 3rd place. The girls 400m was won by Ava Chappell, with Connie DC taking 2nd place and Gabriella Durant taking 3rd place. In the 800m, Shannon and Faye Wilcox took 1st and 2nd place respectively. Dylan Tate won the boys race, with Luca Brown and Elijah Simpson running well to take 2nd and 3rd place in the tough race.

This was the 33rd year of the annual 10K race, with it being our second year organising the event independently as a Club (without the help of an external race organiser). The race was organised by a team of volunteers from Ashford Athletic Club, who have worked tirelessly since October last year to make this event possible. Race Director, Daniel Hughes, received an abundance of fantastic feedback, celebrating the success of this year’s event.

Ashford Athletic Club would like to thank each and every one of the marshals and volunteers that came out to help run this year’s 10km race. Without these volunteers kindly giving up their own time, the event would not be able to take place, and the Club is very grateful for the support of those that did so. We are ever grateful to all of our sponsors - Givaudan, PodPlus and TWB Therapies Ltd - for playing their vital roles in this event. We would also like to thank Ashford Leisure Trust for working alongside the Club to host the event at the Julie Rose Stadium, as well as Fiat Lipscomb, Guide Dogs and Pilgrims Hospice for supporting the event.

The Ashford Givaudan 10K is such an important event for Ashford Athletic Club, with it being our main fundraiser of the year. All funds raised go to support all of our athletes at the Club, allowing them to fulfil their dreams in the sport - whether this be as an athlete, coach or official. We compete in four leagues throughout the season, with some of the funds raised from this race providing free coach travel to those matches across the country.

Congratulations to all those that competed in the 2019 Ashford Givaudan 10K Race! We hope you all thoroughly enjoyed the event and we look forward to seeing you all next year.
