The youngest athletes in the Ashford AC and Thanet AC composite team, took part in their second league meeting of the year. Although very windy, the sun made welcome appearances throughout the day.

This league is for two age groups of boys and girls, under 13 year olds and under 15 year olds, with two competitors from each team in each event, A and B string. The teams are from Brighton and Hove AC, Chelmsford AC, Orion Harriers, Bexley AC, Basildon AC, Newham and Essex Beagles AC, and Ashford AC. After the first match, the Ashford/Thanet tam were in fourth place and were not expecting to improve on this because of a poor turnout of athletes.

In the event, there were only 2 Under 13 boys   which meant that even a relay team could not be mustered. There is a restriction on number of events individual youngsters can compete in so try as they did, the points from this trio were too few to impact the final score.

The excellent tally of fine performances included 31 personal best efforts which demonstrated the level of the team’s application.

It was again good to see young Ashford athletes assisting with the organisation of the match, alongside the adult officials.

As in the first match Ashford were unable to contest all the events, falling a little short of numbers needed. However, the team put in an extremely good performance but despite their efforts was unable to match their fourth place from the first match and finished in seventh place. Team Manager, Tina Tappenden, was officiating all day so was restricted to only occasional spells of encouragement. The team had plenty of vocal and visual support from coaches and parents.  The next match is on Saturday 19st. June at Mile End.
