Road Relay 2017 Season

A fun road relay season concluded at Canterbury on 4th July with an overall 4th for the Men’s A and B Team, and 7th for the Ladies A Team with the Ladies B Team coming 6th.

This is a mixed bag for Ashford. There was a relatively low placing for the men’s team largely explained by the team failing to score at Dymchurch, this was due to only having three runners and Marshall Smith having to run two legs. On the upside was the strong performance of the Men’s B Team, even more impressive when you consider that they only competed at two of the five races. Also for the first time we had two ladies teams competing. The other really encouraging feature is the strong performance of the Ashford AC junior athletes. From Josie, Grace and Jess coming second in the Juniors race at Ashford; to Marshall, Ollie, Adam, James, Will and Dan all turning in fantastic performances; the pinnacle being the dominance of the Ashford Road Relay by a team with an average age of 16. The future is certainly bright. The ladies teams were bolstered by a load of new runners including Briony, Vicky, Heather, Sophie and Emma, ably supported by Candy who often ran double legs.

To build for next year we need the support of a few more runners coming through, both men and ladies. The road relays are a fun way to support the club and a chance to bag a good fast race over a relatively short distance, most being around 4km. It is a good chance for youngsters to gain experience of road racing and a great way for more experienced runners to sharpen their racing. Run on Tuesday evenings in June and July; the team travels to Folkestone, Minnis Bay, Ashford, Dymchurch and finally Canterbury. The men run in groups of four and the ladies in three. It is competitive at the sharp end but great fun for all runners.
